About Us
The Context of Afghan Architecture & Urbanism
Afghan Architecture & Urbanism is dedicated to showcasing the rich heritage of Afghan architecture and urbanism, while exploring the evolving landscape of contemporary practices. We aim to create a platform where professionals, students, researchers, and the general public can come together to learn, share, and discuss ideas for creating resilient, sustainable, and equitable communities.
Mission
Our mission is to explore and illuminate both traditional and contemporary Afghan architecture and urbanism. We aim to provide a platform that connects professionals, students, officials, and the public, fostering a deep understanding of Afghanistan’s architectural heritage and current practices. By highlighting the challenges facing the field—such as rapid urbanization, preservation of cultural heritage, and infrastructure development—we seek to identify and promote opportunities for innovation and improvement. Our goal is to stimulate meaningful dialogue and knowledge exchange, ultimately contributing to the development of vibrant, resilient, and equitable communities.
Values
Balance between tradition and modernization: involves conserving historical architecture while addressing urban demands like housing and infrastructure.
Blending past and present: architects merge traditional Afghan design with modern technologies, creating a harmonious architectural landscape.
Modern urban needs and opportunities for growth: driven by rapid urbanization, challenge housing and infrastructure, requiring innovative solutions and arise as urban planning and architecture shape afghan cities, balancing modernization with respect for cultural legacy.

Abdullah Ahmadzai
Founder | Urban Designer
"Following the 2021 fall of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, which caused the mass exodus of professionals, Afghan cities have faced unprofessional urban interventions and poorly executed development. Urban plans are often disregarded, steering cities in an unintended and unsustainable direction. This page was created to address these challenges by fostering dialogue and advocating for thoughtful, informed urban and architectural practices."
Our Vision for the Future
We envision a future where Afghan cities are built with a deep respect for cultural heritage, environmental sustainability, and community resilience. Our goal is to support the growth of a new generation of professionals who will drive positive change in the way we design, build, and inhabit our cities
